William Tyndale. He was the first to translate parts of the Bible into vernacular English, for the commoners to read and understand. The Catholic Church disliked the idea of the Bible being in the vernacular, perhaps because having a Bible in the vernacular would allow people to form their own opinion about the scripture.

Tyndale was condemned to death for heresy. He was strangled to death, then burned at the stake.
